The £15 million reinvention of the Whitworth has won admirers and the UK’s Art Fund Prize for Museum of the Year 2015.
Its pair of small shops facing each other across the entrance foyer have also gained visitors’ admiration and, significantly, increased sales.
With the Whitworth we created a shop where everything is for sale. Not just the eclectic mix of short-run products from designer makers and artists linked to the gallery – but the tables and cabinets they are merchandised on and the lights that illuminate them.
Average transaction is up by almost 50 per cent and spend per visitor by even more. Monthly sales are multiples of that achieved in the former shop.
“Lumsden definitely listened to what we needed. It’s not just about the customer-facing design, it’s also about functional practicality. They delivered exactly what I had in my mind. Every display unit and fitting is mobile and, with limited run products, over time it becomes a completely different shop. The design enables that.”
