A destination for cultural commerce

A beautiful boutique

With over 65,000 works of art in its collection, the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, is a showcase of Canadian art and cultural heritage, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

The building was designed by Moshe Safdie and opened in 1988, and is a stunning architectural and cultural landmark. The Boutique, which was Lumsden’s first project in Canada, is located at the entrance to the museum and has become a must-see for visitors coming to experience the art, and a destination in their own right for the people of Ottawa. Alongside an extensive choice of books, the shop stocks a wide variety of prints and posters, jewellery, items for the home and toys for children. Many of the products are exclusive to the Boutique and inspired by the Gallery’s collections.

The Boutique is not only a great museum store, it’s a great store for Ottawa and for all visitors to Canada’s capital. It is an important enhancement to the visitor experience and a vital revenue stream to enable ongoing investment in the National Gallery of Canada.

Reflecting the architect’s vision, our 3,300-square-foot store design draws on the building’s use of repetitive shapes and strong lines, utilising slab-like forms and concrete finishes complemented by textured timber. Featuring white-stained Canadian maple and black-and-white American oak, the playful design includes diagonal grain cuts, with highlights of red from the NGC logotype strategically placed. A standout feature is the 10.5-meter display unit and combined jewellery counter and cash wrap desk, enhancing the store’s visual appeal. With improved entrances and a flexible merchandising system, our design optimises visibility, sight-lines, and adaptability for evolving product lines and exhibitions.
