Connecting culture and the community

V&A Dundee is the first V&A museum and first ever design museum built outside of London. Designed by renowned award-winning Japanese architects Kengo Kuma & Associates, the extraordinary three-storey building is itself a testament to great design. Our brief was to create a ‘Living Room for the City’ with flexible, welcoming, inspirational spaces that are a meeting place for both the local community and museum visitors.

The Lumsden Team have produced a design solution which ticks every box in our brief to them. Not just for us in the management team, but also for the architectural vision of Kengo Kuma, the functionality of the operating team and most importantly for our visitors.

Inspirational spaces for Scotland’s first design museum

We designed The Living Room Café, Tatha Bar and Kitchen, and shop. Arranged around a magnificent triple height space, and with spectacular views across the River Tay, the Tatha Bar and Kitchen brings delicious family dining to Dundee’s waterfront. Whilst our design for The Living Room Café and V&A Shop reside at the heart of the museum. The museum has been extremely successful and attracted worldwide attention, breaking its first-year target of 500,000 visitors after just six months and has become a symbol of pride for Dundonians. It was also nominated for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2019.
